CSU Cal Maritime Masterplan

BTD worked with urban ecologist, Joe McBride, to complete a Tree Masterplan and Management Plan for CSU Maritime in Vallejo, CA in response to the school’s reforestation efforts following the 2019 campus fire.

The Management and Master Plan includes replacing highly flammable Blue-gum Eucalyptus trees with Native oak woodland species. The tree palette is selected in anticipation of climate change, and in consideration of ecological diversity and resistance to flammability. A variety of oak species are proposed, as well as low to moderate water-use deciduous and evergreen trees which complement the existing campus tree palette and create a sense of continuity throughout the site.

The line of trees planted along the adjacent highway serves as an air and noise pollution buffer. The replaced trees and 600 additional proposed trees will increase the carbon sequestration by an estimated 24 metric tons per year. BTD’s Masterplan strengthens CSU Maritime’s campus against environmental changes, while respecting the site’s characteristic planting design and natural hillside beauty, overlooking the Bay.
