Manzanita Head Start Play Yard Renovation

This recreation center yard renovation seeks to provide open-ended imaginative play, gross motor development opportunities and creative constructive curriculum opportunities for a Head Start program for young children in the mornings and use by an after school program for elementary-aged children in the afternoons. The yard which was mostly untouched since its initial construction in 1973 was in need of ADA and Head Start compliance as well as general maintenance. A variety of durable, low maintenance materials provide the base for flexible, dynamic play elements. Existing conditions like the mature trees and grade change were integrated in the design with a play deck surrounding a large Cedar and an embankment slide tucked into the hill.
