SFUSD Thurgood Marshall Academic High School

The Design Team developed a master plan in an engagement process that was built on BTD’s strategic masterplanning work with the District in 2008. BTD, working collaboratively with the Civil Engineer and Architect, transformed the large yard into a series of rooms. The new courtyard, two existing courtyards, learning garden, ball courts, sports field, and new garden were each developed for the specific programming of that area and to: foster developmental needs and well-being of the students; be climate resilient in design; and to provide flexible, distinct, and enduring elements for socializing and learning outdoors.

In addition to the outdoor classrooms the yard is designed with many permeable surfaces and shaded areas per the funding by CAL FIRE, SFPUC, and SFUSD for their Schoolyard Outdoor Learning projects.
